Join Kunal Gupta (Babycastles), Syed Salahuddin (Babycastles), Thu Tran (Food Party / Girl Talk), Neil Fridd (Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt) and give birth to a litter of cyborg arcade cabinets. We will combine independent games from local Dutch and French game developers, large stuffed animals, chef knives, colorful duct tape, assorted blinking electronics, and the virus-writing windows scripting software "AutoHotkey", and we will emerge with a new independent video games arcade in Rotterdam.

This hands-on lesson hopes to teach and encourage techiques that help transform a pile of material, electronics, and games into a social machine that is prepared for the unforeseen ways creative people might enjoy video games.

Joining the workshop also gives you free entrance to an afterparty featuring performances by Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt and a DJ-set by Marcus McBride, presentations by Vlambeer, Marc de Vreede and the FOPLONCU team, and of course it makes you one of the first contributors to this new initiative for creative coding and independent videogame development in the city of Rotterdam!

Babycastles

Babycastles is an ongoing effort to increase New York City's engagement with independent video game development. Babycastles has reinvented the arcade a public gallery for independent game artworks and an overall social space for game culture. By encouraging and faciliating spaces to play independent games in New York museums, galleries, bars, music venues, parks, and other public places, Babycastles aims to build attention, accessibility, relevance, publicity, conversation, and economic support for independent video games activity in New York, establishing games as a mainstream & visible part of New York City's art ecosystem.

For nearly 10 years, NYC academic institutions pioneered a New York City independent game community, including Columbia University's Computer Science department, Parson's School of Design, the NYU Game Center, and the NYU-Poly Game Innovation Lab. in the more recent years years, Come Out & Play Festival and Games For Change furthered New York City's identity by championing specific forms of game culture in New York, focusing on games that interact with city geography, or games as social activism. Babycastles joins these efforts by establishing a public, extremely accessible, all-ages, non-academic institution for exhibiting and promoting independent game artists in New York City, bringing incredible worldwide attention to New York City as a model for independent video games as a public, exciting, subversive, and social art culture.
