The last two screenings of the season, and the first Dutch screening in recent memory of a 35mm print of Jodorowsky's masterpiece -- utterly essential for anyone who adores the fully unshackled potential of cinema. Our end of season party -- 69 kino programmes since September -- is this Saturday so after ascending the Holy Mountain, let's celebrate!

And for those who can't, or won't or want second helpings, there will be a repeat screening of Holy Mountain on Wednesday 4th July....

In preparation for the Holy Mountain, Jodorowsky underwent something of a LSD enhanced psycho-spiritual boot camp, including a week of sleep deprivation under the supervision of a Zen master with the entire crew living in isolation -- under Jodorowsky’s direction -- for a month.

Going far beyond the metaphysical spaghetti western theatrics of El Topo, the Holy Mountain offers an incredible barrage of startling imagery and a tantalizing discourse melding every major religion in the world.

Awakening from a comatose sleep and covered in insects, a bearded thief (Horácio Salinas) wanders into a town populated by freaks, fascists, hookers, and religious fanatics, where skinned, crucified livestock are paraded down the street and costumed frogs bloodily reenact the Spanish invasion of South America.

Encountering an alchemist (Jodorowsky naturally!), who demonstrates his knowledge by transforming the thief's excrement into crystals and gold our hero is led to a chamber containing the naked, shaved bodies of six wealthy people of learning, all of them preparing for the next step in their spiritual awakening.

One by one we learn their stories and led by the Alchemist, these nine souls ascend "the holy mountain" where, they believe immortality awaits them.

Poised between erotic delirium and political satire; the cabala and cartoons; catastrophism and salvation; Catholicism and heresy; horror and cinéma vérité; violence and spirituality; performance and narration; and featuring a soundtrack attributed to free jazz god Don Cherry and Archies keyboardist Ron Frangipane, the Holy Mountain is utterly essential for anyone who adores the fully unshackled potential of cinema -- all of us then!
